Gov’t to reduce the duration of University Education.

The Minister for Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempreh has revealed that government is considering the reduction of university education duration. 

He said if successful, the duration for university education will be reduced from the current four years to three years. Dr. Opoku Prempeh explained that government is planning on meeting with lecturers to discuss the possible reduction. 

Speaking at the 2019 Danquah Institute Leadership lecture, the Minister noted that the reason is because all around the world, University education is for a three year period. He said Ghana is one of the very few countries who are still practicing the four year system of University education. Deducing from the Minister’s speech which seem like lecturers may not agree easily, the Minister assured that government will challenge the lecturers to get the current term reduced. Touching on the history of Ghana’s education, Dr. Opoku Prempeh recalled that initially, the duration for undergoing education at the University of Ghana was three years, with a non-scoring exams taken in the first year. Dr. Opoku Prempeh again gave an example of KNUST and said that the duration of University education initially was three years. 

He described the initial system as good even though shorter than currently, saying that students at the time were still able to attain their PhDs. Currently, the duration for University education in Ghana is four years and two years for a diploma course. The Minister stated that government is working hard with the necessary agencies to have the entire years of education in Ghana reduced. He reiterated that since Ghana is not an island, the country can survive with the reduction and still produce world-class graduates.
